The main ingredient of the Ganoderma Essence is ganoderma lucidum, the best of
the reishi mushrooms.
Ganoderma Essence is a high-potency concentrated extract of Ganoderma lucidum, the best of the reishi (ling zhi) mushrooms. Ganoderma Essence is a natural dietary supplement produced by using state-of-the-art technology to extract and retain the essential ingredients from the mushroom, and spray-dry the concentrated extract into powder form. Each capsule contains powdered extract that is equivalent to 5 grams of reishi (ling zhi) mushroom. The powdered extract contains greater than: 12% polysaccharides, 0.15% specific triterpenes, 4% total triterpenes, and 9% proteins.
Ganoderma lucidum (Chinese name "Ling Zhi"; Japanese name "Reishi") has remarkable properties, and for many years the fruit bodies have been used in traditional medicine in oriental countries such as China, Japan and Korea for the treatment of various human diseases. Since 1981, more than 100 papers have been published reporting the isolation of chemical constituents from G. lucidum and their biological activities.
The biochemical and pharmacological effects of G. lucidum include anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertension, hypoglycemic effect, thrombocyte aggregation inhibition, liver function restoration, anti- tumor effect, central nervous system effect, immuno-modulation effect, and treatment of muscular dystrophy and myotonia. The alcoholic extracts of G. lucidum show protective effects against liver damage induced by chemicals.
The anti-tumor activity of Ganoderma polysaccharides, first reported in 1977, is highly effective against Sarcoma-180 tumors in mice and shows no toxicity. Since 1977, many studies have been published on the anti-tumor polysaccharides from G. lucidum. The anti-tumor activity of the polysaccharides is due to their modulatory effects on the immune system. In addition to anti-tumor and immuno- modulation, Ganoderma polysaccharides also show hypoglycemic and anti-hypertensive activity.
Triterpenes are the major constituents found in this plant in addition to polysaccharides. These highly oxidized terpenoids stimulate liver function and have hypolipidemic, cytotoxic (anti-tumor), anti- inflammatory, and anti-hypertensive activity.
Ling zhi-8 is a protein found in Ganoderma lucidum which has immuno-modulating activity.
Interest in this traditional oriental drug has dramatically increased. Several patents have been filed for the use of the G. lucidum extract as food or beverage additives, which showed significant therapeutic effects on patients with mental diseases, Alzheimer's disease, liver failure, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes, including a Japanese patent reporting the use of G. lucidum in the preparation of health food containing soybean proteins.
